Mother’s Day Classic 2023 Recap

I hope all the mum’s had an amazing Mother’s Day and that your loved ones spoilt you. Being a mum is the coolest and hardest job in the world.

We enjoyed our first family fun run at the Mother’s Day Classic (MDC) Gold Coast last Sunday. My husband and son did the 4km with the youngest in the pram and I ran the 8km. It was a great morning, albeit slightly cool with a bit of a drizzle before the start, but other than that it was a beautiful morning with lots of pink flying around. I coloured my nails and had some pink in the shoes but that’s about it. Next year I’m getting into the dress ups!

The Mother’s Day Classic is a great event that raises money for breast cancer research. People from around the country get involved and there is a fun run in various major and smaller cities in each state and territory with over 100,000 participants around Australia each year.

If you want to donate to the Mother’s Day Classic breast cancer research, you can do it here. 1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, but thanks to research, the 5-year survival rate has increased from 76%-92% since the 1990s and hopefully with more research it can reach closer to the 100% mark.

Mother’s Day Classic Race Recap

Pre-Race

There were no nerves, at least not for me. This was a charity run and timing (in theory) wasn’t really relevant. At least that’s what I wanted to tell myself, but let’s be real, I’m a competitive person by nature, so yes, I was chasing a decent time. The week leading up to the MDC, I was aiming for a finish time of sub-43mins. By the time we got the race start I thought I could probably do the flat course in sub-42. I just to make sure to pace myself.

During

My pacing was off from the start. I took off too fast, and even so each kilometre mark we passed felt like it had stretch for two. I kept telling myself to slow down. Pace. There were still several kilometres to go. I didn’t want to conk out before the end of the race or end up with a stitch or industry. When I checked my pace I was at 4:45 and 4:50. I slowed to about 5:10 to ensure I had still fuel in the tank for the second lap.

While I did slow at some points, I ended up picking up the pace in other parts. By the time I got to the turn around point and had a kilometre to go, I shot out again. My shoulders hurt but other than that I felt pretty good.

Finish time: 39:03 with an average pace of 4:55 min/km.

Post Race

I was elated with my finish time. Three minutes faster than expected. I wasn’t sure if I had that sort of pacing in me, at least not over an 8km race.

It was great to see my husband and son at the finish line. They did a great job on their 4km and my son can’t wait till he does his next fun run. I love that this is something that we can do together as a family. Hopefully, in a few years the youngest will want to join in as well.

Naturally, what do you do after running so hard? We met my parents and brother for a buffet breakfast. It was delicious and worth the price tag.

Doing the Mother’s Day Classic was the perfect way for us to start Mother’s Day.
