A Decade Ends

It dawned on me this morning that a decade ends today, and another starts tomorrow.

Bizarre.

What has happened over the past 10 years?

A lot, not so much, or something in between. The world has seen many changes – good, bad, ugly and beautiful. Each moment, each event, each blessing and each disaster teaches us something about ourselves and the world at large. It’s been a colourful decade to say the least.

So here are a few things that I have done over the past ten years in no particular order:

1 – I graduated from high school in 2001

2 – started and dropped out of Bachelor of International Business

3 – changed my degree from business, to criminology, to journalism, and back to business.

4 – graduated with a Bachelor of Business with a major in Economics and minor in Marketing.

5 – started a Masters in Communications.

6 – purchased an apartment and sold it two years later.

7 – started a great job in a good company and moved upwards before foolishly leaving and moving to Europe.

8 – intended to work in the UK for a year but ended up staying in Poland for almost 4

9 – taught English in Poland for three years.

10 – bought a couple of cars

11 – got published in online and print publications

12 – wrote and threw out a few novels

13 – had a couple relationships

14 – worked as a waitress, writer, TEFL teacher, real estate agent, receptionist, team assistant, admin manager, security, hostess and in promotions.

15 – broke hearts and mine was broken a few times.

16 – got engaged

17 – travelled to Singapore, France, the UK, Channel Islands, Spain, Germany, Italy, Czech, Poland, and Egypt.

18 – started learning Spanish and German sporadically

19 – travelled to Australia for a holiday and to my best friend’s wedding

20 – made lots of mistakes and hopefully learnt from them all.

21 – completed a triathlon, half marathon, lots of 10km runs, and a few 5km ones.

22 – became a certified personal trainer and RPM instructor.

23 – purchased a block of land in Bieszczady Mountains, Poland

24 – went through periods of joy, sadness, anger, frustration and excitement

25 – I met lots of wonderful people

I’m not sure if that’s a lot or not but it’s definitely not everything that I wanted to do. I guess I’m a little bit overambitious. But looking back I shouldn’t be complaining. Bring on the next decade!

How did you spend the last decade?

Did you achieve the things you wanted to? Any pleasant surprises along the way?

I’d love to hear about your experiences.

  1. The decade, I hadn’t thought of that. You’ve definitely been busy, but am surprised you are sad to have given up the ‘good job’ when it seems like you’re so happy now?
Goodness, ten years ago I was a boxer living in Thailand and never thinking I would want anything else. Now I’m a journalist (more or less, went back to school this year too to get some fine tuning!) in Ireland – who would have thought?
    Have a great New Year!!

  2. I am happy (most of the time), but I think I could have waited a few more months before leaving the old job but I suppose that doesn’t matter anymore.
Boxing in Thailand sounds interesting and exciting; I’d love to know more about your experience there. Journalism is interesting and exciting too and even better when you can combine it with some of your other passions.
