Birds of a feather…

Out running this morning I decided to change my route a little bit so I didn’t keep circling the same area – more hills, different scenery and a reduction in the monotony of my morning runs. It’s magpie season so I was mostly paying attention to the black and white birds that like to swoop, attacking and poking their beaks in eyes of less aware pedestrians and cyclists, or peck at your head when you’re turned the other way – it’s their breeding season and they are very aggressive and protective. Fortunately, no magpies attacked me. It was the crows that got me worried.

I was running at a comfortable 5:40/km pace along the main road near my area and I suddenly noticed two crows circulating around me. They swooped to about two metres above my head and flew back up to sit on a light pole. They repeated this action about three times scaring the crap out of me until I turned a corner. The cemetery across the road didn’t help matters either.

Normally crows don’t bother me but today they just freaked me out. I’m not sure whether crows are aggressive birds as I’ve never come into close enough contact with them and I don’t really pay attention to the horror films. However, culturally they do have a lot of negativity surrounding them as they are often associated with death, destruction and evil. Yep, my imagination is running wild again. On a more positive note they apparently are very intelligent creatures able to recognise human voices and even mimic them. Nevertheless, next time I’ll be rethinking my running route.
