Getting back into the swing of things

Well, well, well. I haven’t been around for a whole month. I had intended to post more regularly but for the past four weeks I’ve been without an internet connection on the other side of the world…and it’s been fantastic.

Jarek and I (and my mum and brother), spent August in Poland. It was great to get away from the Aussie winter and relax in the Polish summer and spending time with family and friends we hadn’t seen for almost eighteen months. Four weeks of no work, four weeks of no training. That’s right, nada, zilch.

Ok, so I travelled with all intention to keep on training. I packed three pairs of running clothes, a pair of runners, my Suunto Quest, swimmers, goggles and a cap. I was going to keep up with my training darn it. We were even signed up to run a half marathon. We didn’t run it. Shame, but if we had the result could have been nasty. We had just come back from a three day wedding (yes they like to celebrate in Poland), nine hour car trip over 400km (gotta love the Polish roads), and were in no form or condition to be running. We made the wise decision to sleep in instead.

Gotta remember, sometimes on holidays plans can go astray. But that’s ok. The body needs to rest and relax too. Now with the batteries recharged I’m ready to start training. Jarek and I have a 5km fun run coming up in a couple of weeks, a century ride in October, another 5km in November and maybe a sprint triathlon as well, and finally in December it’s the Canberra 70.3, my hopefully first (and not last) half Ironman. So you might be hearing a little bit more about that in coming months.

Spring is here so training in the morning will be more attractive and logical. Now if only I could start listening to the alarm clock and get up at 4:45am each morning. It’ll be tough, but once done, it’ll be worth it. It won’t happen every day, but if it does only a couple times a week I’ll be happy.

it was a bit chilly this morning

We’re nearing the last quarter of the year and it’s time to catch up on completing some of those goals set way back in January. How time has flown? Within a few weeks I’ll be expecting to see Christmas decorations in major shopping centres (seriously, they can’t read calendars Xmas is in December not September, didn’t they receive the memo?)

On this beautiful spring morning I was up at 3:45am, lying in bed for about an hour contemplating getting out of bed. Finally just before 5 I did just that and managed to do some writing, catch up on surfing the net and motivate myself to go for a run. I managed just 2.25km before I gave up. A month of no training will do that to you. It was freezing and all I could think about was breakfast and my sore left knee. It’s not looking good. So I stopped. This week I’m going to slowly get back into training, no pressure, and more cycling rather than running. Somehow I’ll manage. I know I will, I usually do.

How are you doing?
