Race or no race? & Training in Review

It’s Sunday. The end of the weekend for some, the beginning of the week for others.
Races are generally schedule for Sunday mornings. I’m not sure. I’ve never really thought about it. Why Sunday? I think Saturday morning could be much better but then again the roads would be busier too. But at least you’d have a day of rest after instead of having to go to work.

This morning I was supposed to partake in the Gatorade Series Race 2 at Robina. I was signed up, picked up my race pack and was ready to go. That was until I woke up at 4:30 this morning. This was supposed to be a race to practice transitions and not worry about the time or place. Canberra is the A race at the moment. I decided it was probably not to take part in this morning’s event.

Why not?

1 – We had storms and rain throughout most of the weekend. It was hard to judge whether the weather would be friendly on race morning.

2 – I woke up with heaviness in my chest. I usually get that when it feels like I’m coming down with something. Getting sick now would mean missing out on seven to ten days of training and I can’t afford to do that.

3 – The road were wet and if the rain continued it could prove to be a disaster on the bike for me. Hurting myself now would mean no Canberra in four weeks.

4 – My heart wasn’t in it this morning.

A part of me regrets that I didn’t race this morning. But sometimes you have to make a tough call and prioritize. Looking back I’m sure the race would have been fun. I went to the race venue to return the timing chip and I saw competitors still racing and I felt a twinge of envy. It happens. I’ll get over it and there will be plenty of other races ahead.
