Training Week

I was watching the 2011 World Championships in Kona today. It happened by chance as I was flicking through TV channels. It was eye-opening to watch champions like Chrissie Wellington and Craig Alexander go through each leg of the race but what was even more moving and encouraging were the age groupers.

Women, men, young, old, physically challenged, rich, poor, first timers and old timers – they all had a goal to race the Ironman in Kona and listening to their stories, what it took to get to the race, to fight with themselves and push through the pain to cross the Ironman finish line within the 17 hours was heart warming and compelling.
Showing my emotions to those who are close to me doesn’t come easy for me, crying is not my forte, lately however, when I watch people achieve extraordinary feats I get teary. Watching these amazing people cross the finish line after seventeen hours of racing I was all choked up. I can’t begin to imagine the feeling of accomplishment that they had at that moment. I hope that we can all, at least once in our lives, feel that way, whether it’s crossing an Ironman finish line, running our first marathon or 5k, or achieving a significant goal we set for ourselves. It’s got to be an a phenomenal experience.

The majority of my training this week has been on the turbo trainer. I have no excuse not to exercise with it sitting in the living room staring at me every day. Outside it’s been pouring for nearly two weeks and getting some outdoor workouts in hasn’t really been an option. I don’t mind but it would be nice to go for a run in the fresh air, there’s only so much you can do on the treadmill before getting bored especially at the gym. If I had a treadmill at home I’d put on a DVD and run however long necessary. At the gym it’s just dull – and this is frustrating to say because I used to love going to the gym. At the moment, and I hope it’s just a passing phase, it bores me and I have been dreading each visit.

Do you run when it’s raining?
