One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Freaking running injuries. My ankle is busted. I’m not sure what’s with it. I ran on Thursday on the beach for an hour and everything was fine. I felt no pain. No strain. Not even an itch. Friday afternoon I decided to run for 45 minutes on the treadmill with 3x400m at 14k/hr and 1×400 at 15k/hr. The session was exhausting but at no point did I feel like my ankle was playing up. It wasn’t until the evening that I started feeling an annoying ache on the inside of my left leg just above the ankle.

Last night I put Isogel on it which was supposed to heat the area up and reduce inflammation. I woke up pretty much pain free this morning. Then, I went to an RPM class. 45 minutes on the bike, I walked out of the class looking like someone had poured a bucket of water over my head. It was a great workout. I felt the area around my ankle but the feeling was something I’d describe as pain. More of a light ache that made me more aware of the area of my body.

We had a lovely breakfast at a café after the morning gym workout and we decided to head for the beach at Burleigh Point. Gorgeous place. Unfortunately, it seems I wasn’t thinking straight. We went for a walk up Burleigh Point (view below), I was wearing thongs. Bad idea. By the time we got back I really started feeling the pain.

Now I’m sitting at home with my leg up. The area has been iced a few times. The process will be repeated later on and maybe I’ll put some more of the Isogel on it before going to bed. I hoped that I’d only have to take a few days off running but now it looks like it’s going to be closer to a week, but probably two.

I’m frustrated and annoyed. My marathon training is put on hold once again. I think I should be right to get in the pool at least and do a few swim sessions to prepare for the triathlon in May. I’ll still keep up with my Pilates classes twice per week, and do some weight training that doesn’t involve any impact. Running is out and that really pisses me off because I was really enjoying my beach runs and getting used to difference in temperature and humidity.

I feel like with each step forward I seem to take two back. I’m wondering whether a time will come where I will be able to run five to six days a week and stay injury free.
