Taking a dip

Went swimming today. It was nice to get back in the pool. The workout was exhausting though. I managed to do 30 minutes with a total of 700m. 6x50m at an easy pace, 4 x 25 fast, and 6x50m easy. I was knackered but in a really good way. I love the tired feeling after a decent workout and even though I was in the water, I managed to get my heart rate up and sweat.

In May I’m planning on doing a triathlon. I still haven’t decided on the distance yet. There’s the enticer which consists of a 300m swim, 10km bike, and 2.5km run. I completed this distance a few years ago and am considering doing the next distance – 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run. The bike and run I’m not worried about, it’s the swim that’s a concern. 300m in open water no problem, 750m is another story.

The good thing is that I have a background in swimming. I swam in my youth days and competed at a local, regional and state level. Over the past decade or so swimming hasn’t been a priority. The technique is still there but the speed and endurance are lacking. I’ve got six weeks to work on that with two to three swim sessions per week.

Before deciding on the distance I’ll see how my performance will go in the pool. If I stick to my training plan over the next four weeks and see an improvement than I’ll go for the longer distance. If I feel that I’m not up to scratch I’ll do the shorter distance and train up for the longer distance for the new season that starts towards the end of the year. What do you think?
