Time

It’s December already. How is that even possible? I swear it was just the beginning of November and thoughts of Christmas and New Year were still more than a couple weeks away. I wasn’t thinking about Christmas shopping and house sitting, and trying to keep up the energy with all the Christmas parties around and other commitments that were unavoidable. But here we are with only three weeks till Christmas. Wow. I’m almost certain someone’s pressed the fast forward button because time never used to fly this fast. Or maybe it’s because I’m getting older.

With time passing us by so quickly it’s easy to miss a few days of training and realise only after a week that you haven’t actually followed that training plan you set yourself. I’ll be the first to put my hand up and say I’m guilty of that. Although recently I’ve been pretty good with the training. I have even started spending more time on the bike as planned. Two mornings a week and one day at the weekend and it feels great. I’m hoping to keep it up – I also asked Santa for a windtrainer this year so maybe I might get one to help me train when the weather is not all that great. While I love the Aussie summers they can turn nasty and it might pour with rain for weeks without end – though I hope this year nature will be kind enough not to give us a repeat of last year.

We are controlled by time. We get up at a certain time; work a particular number of hours; we set dates at specific times; we follow a routine that’s dictated by the hands on a clock. Time set for training is equally important and if you’re a busy person and forget to put your training into your calendar you could be wasting quality time that could help you achieve your goals. Instead of hitting the snooze button one time too many or putting your workout as the last thing on your to do list you could pencil them in making them a priority and making the most of the spare time you have.

I really admire athletes who maintain full time jobs, have a family they have to look after, social commitments to meet and still make the time to train whether it be for a 5km fun run or an Ironman distance event. We all have the same twenty four hours in a day, we simply choose to spend those hours in different ways. It’s December, and for this month I’m going to put more hours into my training. No more hitting the snooze button because it’s too windy or I had a late night; no more excuses that I worked hard yesterday so I can take today off. Nope, none of that. This month I’m making my training a priority as a Christmas gift to myself.

The first few days of this month have been busy with a lot happening, and I had a small issue with my foot which prevented me from doing anything with too much impact. Here’s December workouts so far:

Dec 1 – 20 min walk with dog
Dec 2 – 20 min walk with dog
Dec 3 – 2 x 20 min walk with dog + 30 min run
Dec 4 – 20 min walk with dog + 30 min weights + 20 min run
Dec 5 – 20 min walk + 15 min stretch

  1. Sounds like you’re putting in the effort alright, at least you don’t have snow to deal with this year! I loved that post you did for me last year on how to run in the snow
